For filmmaker Graham High, what begins as an investigation into a hometown mystery unfolds into something bigger.Ford Comes to Wichita is a feature-length documentary that explores an endearing American city, its unassuming locals, and the unexpected ways we find ourselves in the places we left behind.
But after my parents’ divorce, my mother moved me and my sister away, leaving my father behind and Wichita as a city frozen in time.
As I grew up, I collected father figures from TV and Film, but none of them compared to Harrison Ford. Adventurer. Hero. Aviator. So when I learned about Harrison Ford’s yearly visits to Wichita, I wanted to explore the city through his eyes. And as I began filming, I realized this wasn’t a film about a movie star so much as a film about people, about the stories we tell, the places we carry with us, and the ways we reconcile with the past.Although I’ve produced many documentary features and series for over a decade (Nobu; Carville: Winning is Everything, Stupid; Victoria's Secret: Angels & Demons), Ford Comes to Wichita is my first feature documentary as a director and my most personal work to date.
In other words, he may be the last person who’d want a documentary made about himself.Ford Comes to Wichita inverts the hagiographic celebrity doc by focusing on the anti-celebrity: the Midwestern everyman. They are the storytellers of the film—the ones who, by chance or trade, have crossed paths with Harrison Ford. Through their stories, they paint a heartfelt portrait of an American city and reveal a rarely seen side of one of the world’s most recognizable movie stars.
